A thousands-strong crowd converged on the Kalgan River Caravan Park on Sunday for a day of thrills and spills at the Kalgan Stampede.

Organiser Tom Kennedy said last week’s rodeo would have been his last if it failed, but a strong turnout had encouraged him to go again in 2021.

He said he was impressed with the patience of the spectators who had to comply with COVID-19 precautions.

Roping, wrestling and barrel racing events provided some variety in between the bull and bronc riding rounds.

Live music kept the crowd entertained later in the night.

“It’s an adrenaline rush for the riders,” Mr Kennedy said.

“Once they do it once, it’s hard for them to stop. They just want to have another go.

“It’s like a big-wave surfer, there’s a certain rush there you can’t describe.”

Mr Kennedy and his beloved Brahman bull Bruce even took centre stage.

“Brucey Brahman behaved himself all day, although he bucked me off in the arena,” he said.
