Owning Manhattan

Friday, streaming on Netflix

Of all dramatic, over-the-top, inappropriate, gossip-fuelled, heartwarming or soul-destroying algorithms I’ve spiralled into on the world’s most enjoyable time waster — TikTok — New York real estate would have to be one of my favourites.

Depending on what tax bracket you fall into, these videos could sit comfortably in any/most of the categories listed above, as content creators take you inside some of the most glamorous multimillion-dollar NYC apartments and some dwellings that are the size of an average Australian bathroom (with the price tag of an average three-bedroom, two-bathroom suburban Aussie home).

If this algorithm similarly tickles your fancy, then this Netflix series is your glossy, high-drama and higher stakes version.

Perfect for fans of Selling Sunset and Buying Beverly Hills, Owning Manhattan similarly follows an ambitious office of agents as they stop at nothing to become the top brokerage in the world.

At the helm is Ryan Serhant, a slick-haired, sleek-suited chief executive of a business that sold nearly $4.5 billion worth of real estate in just 2023. By comparison, the woman dubbed Western Australia’s top agent tipped over $1b in sales after eight years in the industry. Both unimaginable achievements, but it reveals the astronomical prices people will dish out for their slice of the Big Apple.

While you won’t stumble across any Harry-Potter-under-the-staircase-sized apartments during your spiral into this series, there will be sky-high penthouses (Serhant has a $375 million number on his books) that will destroy your soul — in the glitziest way possible.

Colin From Accounts S2

Thursday, streaming on Binge

I’ve found myself with only one complaint about season two of this otherwise excellent show. I want more. I love immersing myself in the worlds of Ashley, Gordon and their patient pooch but wish the episodes were meatier than under 30 minutes — it feels like there is more story to tell and jokes to be laughed out loud over. Otherwise, no notes: this instalment has been so fresh and fun, particularly the hilarious dinner with actor Virginia Gay and her vintage hat.

The Bear S3

Thursday, streaming on Disney Plus

Sure, this series can make your nervous system feel like you threw back five black coffees in quick succession, but have I been hanging out for season three — of course. We left a frazzled team on their first night of service at The Bear: Sydney has thrown up in the alley, Marcus has missed calls from his sick mother’s nurse and Carmy is cut out of the fridge only to realise he’s completely destroyed his relationship with Claire. The trailer shows we’re in for more fast-paced, erratic and at times terrifying times inside the kitchen we’ve come to know and love. Deep breaths.

Abbott Elementary S3

Wednesday, streaming on Disney Plus

While The Bear sends the nerves into disarray, this comedy series feels like a soul-warming bowl of chicken soup. Excited to head back to Philly to join the gang back at school and, as per usual, crossing my fingers that Janine and Gregory finally get together for good in this season.

I Am: Celine Dion

Tuesday, streaming on Prime Video

I’m SO excited for this one, and not just because It’s All Coming Back To Me Now is my favourite karaoke song (apologies to anyone who has had to ensure). After stepping out of the spotlight due to a serious neurological condition diagnosis, in her own words, Dion is back — and this documentary is set to chart the highs and lows of her career, life, marriage to the late René Angélil and what’s next for our resilient diva.
