Broadbrush: Amelie comes to Subi, Young hospo stars get a shout-out and Indigo Oscar feeds Cott’s art lovers

Amelie spreads joy The former Bistro Felix restaurant in Rokeby Road has new owners, hospo professional and former London bar owner, Kat Dehavilland. and Regal Theatre GM, Kim Knight. The bar, to be renamed Amelie, is slated to open on May 1 with pre-launch try-outs from mid-April. Dehavilland told Broadbrush the name for her new bar came from the French movie of the same name: “In the movie, Amelie’s purpose in life was to spread joy. We love that idea.” Dehavilland was the WA manager for Treasury Wine Estates (Penfolds) and ran her successful bar, 25 Canterbury Lane, in London before returning to Australia. The chef will be Richard Pothecary, who has cooked at a few members’ clubs in Perth in recent years. Cuisine-wise, think tapas (sort of) and dishes like slow-roasted shoulder of lamb, grilled haloumi and chargrilled Fremantle octopus. The private dining room at the rear of the dining room will be renamed the Poetry Room and will showcase a wall of back vintages of “many fabulous wines.” Women of hospo: we salute you I hope you checked out our “Rising Stars” feature in PLAY magazine and online. We did a fair bit of research for the hospitality inclusions and, along the way, we were struck by just how many accomplished young women have leadership roles in WA’s restaurants and bars. There were many more than we could include in our feature, so we thought, let’s give a shout-out to some of our female young guns including Corvo head chef Rose Bass, Sofika Boulton, the 26-year-old head chef at the stunning Bar Rogue, Nextdoor head chef Ashleigh Pattison, Il Lido and Canteen Pizza general manager Sally Lovell, Patty Kasprzak, the switched-on GM at John Parker’s Dandelion, Liberte Bar’s Amy Hamilton, Emily Jones (Republic of Fremantle), Pingping Poh (the first female chef of a Nobu restaurant in Australia), Blaze Young at Neiuw Ruin and, of course, our inclusion in this week’s Rising Stars feature, Paola Arosio. All these women follow a previous generation of career hospitality professionals, leaders and glass ceiling smashers, Young George owner Melissa Palinkas, sommeliers Emma Farrelly (Como Hotel/Fini Group), Michelle Forbes (Lady Lola, Dunsborough) and the accomplished Foni Pollitt (Mayfair Lane) and WA hospo royalty Kate Lamont. We’re in good hands. Bevvies on the beach We love a bit of kulcha in this column, which is why we’re big fans of Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe Beach. It’s on now until March 21 and Twiggy’s pop-up, Indigo Oscar, in the old tearooms building, is putting out the red carpet for hungry, thirsty arts lovers. Cocktails, frosty beverages, wines, oysters, snacks and the like will be on hand to sate you and slake you after your tour of the obscure and wonderful installations.
