A Man Called Otto review: Scandi black comedy remake is a decidedly un-Hollywood vehicle for Tom Hanks

When Hollywood sets out to remake a successful foreign film, the results can vary wildly. Best case scenario is 2021’s CODA, the Apple Original that was a remake of the 2014 French film, The Belier Family. It offered a new take on the original, and you’d even say improved upon it, given CODA won the Academy Award for best picture last year. Then you have the opposite end of the remake spectrum and a film such as Bruce Willis’ mediocre 1997 thriller The Jackal, which was a dull reworking of the Fred Zinnemann 1973 classic, The Day of the Jackal. But mostly these Hollywood remakes fall somewhere in the middle, neither great nor terrible, just solid versions of a movie most of us have never heard of, in a language that doesn’t require us to have the subtitles turned on. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. That’s pretty much where A Man Called Otto lands, which has been adapted from Swedish author Fredrik Backman’s 2012 novel, A Man Called Ove, which became a 2015 film of the same name from director Hannes Holm. The American remake is notable for a couple of things, with the first being the presence of the one and only Tom Hanks as Otto, a curmudgeonly widower, who has it in for everything and everyone. Whether it’s a bloke who stretches his groin in public while wearing running tights, a woman whose annoying little dog pees on his verge, or modern life in general, Otto can’t stand it. Which, when combined with the recent passing of his wife, the light of his life, makes it easier to decide to end his. And this is the other notable thing about this American remake – it’s decidedly un-American. A lot of that has to do with the film’s Swiss director Marc Forster, who previously helmed Monster’s Ball, Stranger Than Fiction and World War Z. Forster doesn’t shy away from the suicide storyline, which makes perfect sense in a Scandi black comedy, but is very unexpected for a Hollywood-Hanks vehicle. Get the tone slightly wrong and it’s very easy to offend, let alone fail to generate humour or heart. Forster manages both by treating the suicide attempts seriously, but allowing light in through Otto’s interactions with others, namely new Mexican neighbour Marisol (played with considerably colour by Mariana Trevino). If anything, the film is maybe a little too Euro-centric, with characters that seem like they’ve been ripped from Sweden and don’t feel thoroughly authentic in a Stateside setting. So, other than Hanks, we’re given mostly caricatures, which sets the plot up for an anti-climactic finish. But even a grumpy Hanks is impossible to dislike, and this movie will surely have its admirers. 3 stars Starring: Tom Hanks, Mariana Trevino Rating: M In cinemas: January 1 Lifeline: 13 11 14
