Hollywood superstar Nicolas Cage has landed in Perth ahead of starting production on a new movie called The Surfer — believed to be filmed in the State’s South West.

In August, there were reports the unconfirmed film was set to take place in Margaret River and Yallingup.

It seems the rumours are true after the 59-year-old was spotted at Perth Airport on Monday morning with his 28-year-old wife Riko Shibata and young daughter August in tow.

The actor, known for his roles in action films and big-budget summer blockbusters, showed every inch of his star quality wearing an emerald green velvet jacket, black jeans and stylish sunglasses.

The family seemed to be in good spirits after their trip across the country from Sydney.

Shibata held their daughter while Cage was on luggage duty as the pair headed for the airport’s exit.

The Surfer, being billed as a thriller, is set to see Cage battle against a gang of Australian surfers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, when Cage returns to his beachside hometown in Australia, many years after building a life for himself in the US, he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a local gang of surfers who claim strict ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood.

“Wounded, The Surfer decides to remain at the beach, declaring war against those in control of the bay. But as the conflict escalates, the stakes spin wildly out of control, taking The Surfer to the edge of his sanity,” the report said of the synopsis.

About two months ago it was reported that a casting agency sent out a call to high school students to audition for roles for an acting gig alongside the Hollywood heavyweight.

The call-out said teenage boys would play as young surfers who hung out with a surf gang.

“We are looking for kids who are really confident with a bit of attitude... we see them riding their BMXs delivering beer and generally causing trouble around the town,” the call-out said.

The film will shine the spotlight on Margaret River not seen since the movie Drift was filmed in the region more than a decade ago.

Cage and Shibata met in Japan in 2020 when he was filming Sion Sono’s Prisoners of the Ghostland.

The Japanese-born actor landed a role in the movie playing one of the four Mannequin Women.

After getting engaged on FaceTime, the couple tied the knot at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas in February 2021.
